One car careened into a tree after colliding with another car in an accident that sent two people to Peconic Bay Medical Center this morning.

Riverhead Police responded to a call for a two-car accident shortly after 8:30 this morning at the intersection of Route 58 and Commerce Drive.

A Saturn was eastbound on Route 58 attempting to make a left turn on to Commerce Drive when it collided with a Honda CR-V traveling westbound on Route 58, police said at the scene. The Honda then struck a tree in front of Panera Bread.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Flanders-Northampton Ambulance each responded with one ambulance and transported both drivers to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police briefly closed Route 58 to traffic from Mill Road to Commerce Drive to clear the roadway.
