This was a tough week for fishing as Mother Nature started the week with a nice early spring storm. Stiff winds kept most boats tied to the dock. There was some action to report from the south shore.

To our south in Moriches Inlet, Captain Joe on the King Cod reported getting out a few times when the weather cooperated. The water temperatures are still very cold and as a result, the fish are still very deep, in 200 plus feet of water. Fishing has been steady with 30 to 40 cod per trip with a smattering of ling and pollack. On March 23, Joe Scarramuzino was high hook with 14 cod and a few ling and pollack.

Out in Shinnecock inlet, the Shinnecock Star is temporarily in dry dock getting ready for the start of the porgy/fluke season.

If cod fishing is not your thing, the NYS DEC will be stocking trout in Laurel Lake as well as the Carmens River in the town of Brookhaven, starting in March and going right through April. For a complete stocking schedule check this link from the DEC’s website . They will be stocking brown and rainbow trout. Newly stocked trout are suckers for just about anything you throw at them, so this can be a fun way to kick off your 2015 season.
