Janis Ellis-Smith, a teacher at Phillips Avenue Elementary School was awarded a mini-grant entitled “Zhongguo China” by the Riverhead Retiree Council #22. The purpose is to provide the essential components of a reader’s workshop at school and at home. Parents and guest speakers will be invited into the classroom to participate in a reader’s workshop and talk about books with the children. The room will be decorated in a manner representative of the Chinese culture.
Georgette Keller, a reading teacher at Roanoke, was awarded a mini-grant by the Riverhead Retiree Council #22. Christine Wasko and Rosemary Brennan (retired RCFA) visited Lisa Bohleber’s kindergarten class at Roanoke to see the phonological development activities we were able to purchase with a mini-grant they awarded the school.
Reading teacher Corrine Arrasate and literacy coach Tammi Michaelson were there as well as Bohleber and an aide working with students who were using books and games purchased with the mini grant. Arrasate was working with two children, who although they had started kindergarten with no English language skills, were happily identifying and placing small animal shapes in cans marked with beginning letters of the pieces they chose and identified.
