A drunk driver on parole for 2011 controlled substance convictions led police on a high-speed chase early Saturday morning that ended when the man lost control and crashed into a LIRR vehicle in Aquebogue, according to Riverhead Town Police.

Police said Tremaine B. Kelly, 30, of Shirley, refused to stop for police on East Main Street near OK Petro just before 2 a.m. Saturday. He led police on a high-speed chase. Kelly lost control of his 2005 Honda Accord at Edgar Avenue and Meeting House Creek Road where, according to police, Kelly’s Honda “came in contact with the railroad tracks and struck a parked railroad vehicle.”

Kelly then attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended, police said.

He was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center for injuries sustained in the crash.

Kelly was charged with driving while intoxicated, unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, reckless driving, speeding, and several other vehicle and traffic violations, police said.

He was released on a Desk Appearance ticket for a later court appearance, due to his admittance at PBMC.

Kelly was one of 23 alleged people charged in February 2011 after a months-long investigation by the Suffolk County district attorney into a crack ring run by the Bloods street gang. The operation involved processing, packaging and selling crack cocaine and counterfeiting. District Attorney Thomas Spota at the time identified Kelly as the one Crips gang member arrested in the sweep.

He was subsequently convicted of criminal sale of a controlled substance in the third degree and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, both class B felonies. Kelly was paroled in July 2013 after serving just under two years in an a state penitentiary.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
