This year’s annual Certamen, a strictly academic, brain-powered competition on all things Ancient Roman, was the biggest and best-attended in the event’s history. Sixteen schools from Suffolk to Queens sent their best Latin scholars to SUNY Stony Brook on March 31 for the head-to-head contest in the fine points of Latin grammar, syntax and vocabulary, and the endless details of ancient history, mythology and classical civilization.

The Riverhead team – a perennial powerhouse in the small but exceptionally scholastic subculture of Latin on Long Island – took three of the day’s total dozen prizes – just behind rival Port Jefferson’s four.

Our Blue Wave Latinists stood tall with a First Place at the Middle School level, and showed handsomely at Third Place in both the Level 2 and Advanced brackets.

“Bravi tutti” to all the Riverhead Latinists who represented our school community with high honors at this prestigious annual event!
