The East End Arts Gallery is pleased to announce the new juried, all media art show, The Cartoon, at the East End Arts Gallery which will open with a reception on Friday, April 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. This show will feature artwork with elements of cartoon; East End Arts Gallery Director Jane Kirkwood explains: “The cartoon has more than one meaning in art. It can be a caricature where a subject’s features are exaggerated in a humorous way. It’s also what those strange, flat little creatures that pop out of our imagination onto our drawing pad are called. And what we call an animated film. Lastly, it’s the full-size drawing made by an artist as a preliminary design for a painting or other work of art.” This show will be juried by Matthew Langland, artist and key animator of the feature film ‘Waking Life’.
At the reception, the public is invited to enjoy refreshments and meet the artists. The reception is a free event, open to the public. Artwork on exhibit is for sale. The show will run from the opening reception through June 12. The East End Arts Gallery is located at 133 East Main Street in Riverhead and open hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Growing up in the Chicago area, guest juror Matthew Langland’s earliest exposure to and education in painting was influenced by Chicago Imagists Jim Nutt, Karl Wirsum and Ed Paschke. He studied with Peter Saul and Michael Ray Charles at the University of Texas at Austin, worked as an animator on Richard Linklater’s 2001 film ‘Waking Life’, and has been active as both a painter and illustrator in Brooklyn since 2002. His work has been exhibited in Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York.
