They came, they saw, they cleaned.
About 35 volunteers showed up for the Riverhead BID’s first “Riverhead Clean — 2015” downtown cleanup yesterday. Volunteers scoured Main Street, the riverfront, downtown alleys and John Lombardi Memorial Park, stuffing dozens of plastic trash bags with litter.
Councilman John Dunleavy, the town board liaison to the Riverhead BID Management Association thanked the volunteers for their efforts.
“The only way we can attract business to Riverhead and people is to have a nice clean town,” Dunleavy said.
Downtown resident Jennifer Eager explained why she and three of her children pitched in. “We just want to see downtown thrive,” Eager said.
“This is a great community effort for downtown,” said Councilwoman Jodi Giglio, one of the volunteers who picked up trash throughout the morning.
The Eager family and other volunteers enjoyed a complimentary slice of pizza and fountain drink at Joe’s Pizzeria on West Main Street. Volunteers were also treated to an Italian ice from Ralph’s and RiverheadLOCAL baseball caps.
“I’d like to do this on a regular basis,” said BID Management Association board member Bobby Hartmann, who came up with the idea and coordinated the effort. “Many hands make light work.”
Hartmann said volunteers can earn community service credits for participating.
