A drunk wrong way driver from Wading River almost hit a police car twice and forced other motorists off the road before being stopped Friday night in Cutchogue, authorities said.

According to Southold Town Police, Marsha L. Beale, 54, was arrested at 11:23 p.m. on Route 48 and Cox Lane and charged with driving while intoxicated, a felony, police said.

Police said Beale was seen driving a blue Hyundai east in the westbound lane of County Road 48; a marked police car attempted to stop the vehicle, using lights and sirens. Beale almost collided with the marked unit on two separate occasions, police added.

Beale continued eastbound in the wrong lane, forcing oncoming traffic off the roadway, before being stopped by police, authorities said.

Beale failed several roadside sobriety tests, was found to be intoxicated, arrested, and taken to police headquarters, where she was processed and held for arraignment.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
