Riverhead firefighters responded to the scene of a huge fire on Dune Road in Westhampton Beach Wednesday afternoon.
Fire ripped through the oceanfront Sandpiper co-op apartments on Dune Road shortly after 3 p.m. The seasonal complex was not yet open for the season and only maintenance workers were on the property at the time the fire broke out, Westhampton Beach Mayor Maria Moore told Newsday.
Riverhead was one of many area fire departments called by Westhampton Beach Fire Department to help battle the blaze, which completely destroyed the building. Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps was called to the scene to stand by at 5:25 p.m.
No injuries were reported in the incident and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
