A farm worker in Laurel was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital this afternoon after the tractor he was driving was hit by a westbound train on a private crossing just west of Laurel Lane and south of Main Road at about 2:30 p.m.
The entire front of the tractor, which was northbound on a farm road, was ripped off by the impact of the crash.
A Suffolk Police Medevac helicopter arrived at a landing zone established in a farm field near the crash at about 3 p.m.
The condition of the farm worker was not immediately known. He was conscious and speaking to police at the scene.
The train was not a passenger train and had only crew members on board.
Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Jamesport Fire Department responded to the scene along with Riverhead police.
