Two travel lanes in each direction of the Long Island Expressway between exits 70 and 71 will be closed this weekend to allow crews to repair the Halsey Manor Road bridge.

The lane closures will take place from 5 a.m. Friday, May 1 through 5 a.m. Monday, May 4, weather permitting, the state Department of Transportation announced.

A single travel lane around the active construction site will remain open in both directions, the DOT said, but motorists are urged to use alternate routes or they will experience delays. These off-season weekend days were chosen for the work because traffic volumes are lower, the state agency said.

The Halsey Manor Road bridge over the LIE requires major repairs after being struck by a truck, the DOT said. The repairs are needed to preserve its structural integrity and maintain the safety of motorists, according to the agency.

“As with most road work, this operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather. Emergency service providers and local officials have been notified of these travel lane closures. Motorists are being warned in advance via electronic message signs,” the DOT press release said.
