A forgotten pot left cooking on a stove in an unoccupied Flanders Road home drew Flanders firefighters to the scene on the report of a possible structure fire.

A worker at the marina where the two-story house is located saw smoke billowing out the windows of the home and called 911, Flanders Fire Chief Joe Pettit said.  The house filled with smoke because of the scorched pot, he said.

“There was so much smoke in the house it was coming out of the chimney,” Pettit said, pointing to a brick chimney on the back of the house. “That’s a lot of smoke.”

Firefighters searched the house to make sure no one was inside, opened windows and set up fans to clear the air.

The house at 110 Flanders Road is located almost directly across the road from the firehouse, where firefighters were gathered for a brunch following the department’s annual memorial service. They had just sat down to eat when the the report of a structure fire came in, sending two dozen firefighters racing out the door.
