Riverhead Fire Department held its annual memorial service and inspection today at fire department headquarters.

A bell tolled in memory of the fallen, as the names of deceased firefighters were read aloud during a solemn ceremony. Firefighters in dress uniform stood at attention with their companies within the truck bay of the house.

The memorial service was conducted by Fire Police Patrol Capt. Baycan Fideli and officiated by Chaplain Thomas Tobin.

During the service, the chaplain read the following poem titled, “Fireman’s Prayer” :

When I’m called to duty, God
wherever flames may rage
give me strength to save a life
whatever be its age

Help me to embrace a little child
before it is too late
or save an older person from
the horror of that fate

Enable me to be alert
to hear the weakest shout
and quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out

I want to fill my calling and
to give the best in me
to guard my neighbor and
protect his property

And if according to your will
I have to lose my life
bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife

At the conclusion of services, Chief Joseph Raynor, First Assistant Chief Kevin Brooks, Second Assistant Chief Peter Jackman and Third Assistant Chief Timothy Corwin conducted the roll call and an inspection of their ranks.
