Updated (9:34 p.m.): Riverhead Police detectives have not been able to substantiate the claim of a robbery on West Main Street Monday afternoon, according to a press release issued by police Monday night.

The Detective Division is actively investigating the case and is asking anyone with information to contact the Riverhead Police Department 631-727-4500 Ext. 289.  All calls will be kept confidential.

Original story: Riverhead  Town and New York State Police are searching for an assailant who hit a man on the head with a baseball bat on West Main Street and robbed him of $300.

Police described the assailant as a black male, approximately 30 years old. He fled on foot in an easterly direction on Main Street after the attack, police said.

The victim, a Hispanic male, suffered a cut on the back of his head and was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center, police said.

Town police called the state police K9 unit for assistance.

The attack took place east of Advanced Imaging Systems, across from the Riverhead Supermarket grocery store, at about 3:30 p.m., police said.
