Following a successful debut last May that saw 25 participants from throughout the East End compete, the Jamesport Meeting House will hold its second annual Community Spelling Bee on Friday evening, May 22, at 7:30.

Those wishing to compete as spellers are asked to sign up on the organization’s website. Spellers are also urged to ask relatives, friends and business colleagues to sponsor them.

“Recruiting sponsors helps make this a true community event and increases the evening’s fun,” said event chairman Steve Berger. “Last year, more than 200 sponsors showed up to cheer on their spellers.”

According to Berger, sponsorships for each speller should add up to a minimum of $50, but can reach as high as a speller’s network of sponsors can gather. In the first year of the competition, sponsorships reached a total of more than $4,500. The proceeds, Berger said, go directly toward restoring the 284-year-old meeting house, now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

He noted that those wanting to compete in the spelling bee should act quickly to register online since competition will be limited to 30 spellers. He also said that this year’s list of words to spell will be “kinder and gentler” than last year’s list, “but still a challenge.”

Those with questions about the competition are invited to call a special spelling bee hotline at 631-722-0008.
