In June, Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton will enter year two of a generous two-year $56,000 PetSmart Charities grant to spay or neuter a total of 1,500 feral and free-roaming cats as part of a major campaign against cat homelessness in Riverhead and the surrounding region.
“A big reason for pet homelessness is unwanted litters so a big part of the solution is pet sterilization,” says Pamela Green, Executive Director of Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton. “We’re grateful to PetSmart Charities for not only recognizing the reality of the situation but giving us resources to help deal with it.”
Cats must be in traps when brought to the Kent Animal Shelter Clinic. All feral cats will be ear tipped designating that they are feral so that they will not be trapped again in the future. Traps are available at the shelter. A deposit is required, however it will be refunded upon return of the trap. A free rabies vaccination will be given to each feral cat at no cost.
There is a $20 co-pay on this surgery. Appointments must be made in advance by calling the Kent Clinic at 727-7797. The Clinic is open by appointment Monday through Saturday, 10AM-4PM. Spaying and neutering is one of the most effective ways to reduce the homeless pet population and is safe for puppies and kittens as young as eight to 10 weeks old, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.
