(Updated: 6:30 p.m.) Three people were injured, one seriously, in a head-on crash at the intersection of Main Road and County Route 105 at about 7:15 Sunday morning.
An eastbound Toyota minivan operated by Thomas Corrao, 58, of Patchogue, ran a red light and collided with a southbound Honda sedan on CR 105 operated by Duglas A. Velasquez-Camey, 21, of Riverhead, according to a Riverhead Police press release issued Sunday evening.
Corrao and his passenger, Thomas Corrao, 23, were transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center with minor injuries, police said. They were both treated and released, police said.
Velasquez-Camey was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries , police said. A Suffolk County MedEvac helicopter was called to airlift the patient but emergency medical personnel decided to transport him by ambulance instead.
Police at the scene this morning said it appeared the Honda was westbound and attempting to turn left onto southbound CR 105.
“Based on physical evidence at the scene and speaking with witnesses, the Toyota appears to have failed to yield the right of way to the Honda, entering the intersection against a red light and colliding with the Honda,” according to the police press release.
Velasquez-Camey remains in critical but stable condition at this time, police said.
Riverhead Fire Department responded to secure a landing zone for the helicopter, which landed on Route 105. Fire police also assisted Riverhead Police with traffic control
Traffic in both directions was shut down on both roads in the vicinity of the crash. The roads remained closed for more than three hours.
