A 70-year old Fort Salonga man drove into the Cooperage Inn Thursday evening, doing significant damage to the restaurant’s main entrance.
Riverhead Police said Harold Adamo, while attempting to back his 2006 Mercedes Benz out of a stall in the restaurant’s parking lot, was unable to stop and hit a parked vehicle. Adamo then drove forward through the parking lot, up the walkway and crashed into the restaurant entrance, police said. After that, he put the vehicle into reverse and traveled across the lawn, striking a tree, according to a police report.
No one was injured in the mishap.
Police have not pressed charges against Adamo. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, police said.
The Riverhead Fire Marshal was called to inspect the structural integrity of the restaurant’s entry way, police said.
The building is safe for use, Fire Marshal Dave Andruskiewicz said in a phone interview tonight. It will reopen as usual tomorrow, he said.
This is the third time in three weeks that a vehicle has crashed into a building in Riverhead. In an odd coincidence, in each accident, the vehicle crashed into the building’s entryway. An SUV plowed into the Pizza Hut restaurant on the Route 58 traffic circle on May 15. A car crashed into the entrance of the North Shore Christian Church on Kroemer Avenue on May 20.
