A Riverhead man faces a slew of charges after crashing a car on West Main Street following a police pursuit and then attempting to flee police on foot yesterday.

Police officers patrolling the Polish Town area observed Alfred Cowell, 35, of Middle Road, driving a black Honda erratically, according to a police report. Cowell attempted to flee the area at an unreasonable speed, police said, and committing multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.

The Honda, which bore Maryland tags, continued westbound on Route 25 and attempted to turn into the Greenview Motel on West Main Street, when Cowell lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a concrete wall at the entrance to the motel, police said. Cowell then fled on foot and was shortly after apprehended by police, according to the report.

Cowell was charged with reckless driving, unlawful fleeing, aggravated unlicensed operation in the second degree, resisting arrest and numerous Vehicle and Traffic Law violations, police said.

In December, Cowell pleaded guilty to petit larceny, resisting arrest and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree stemming from his arrest last May following a crash in which he was alleged to have left the scene and also fled on foot.

He was charged with possession of stolen property, drug possession and unlicensed operation charges, after a traffic stop in February 2011, in which he also attempted to flee from police, according to a Southampton Town Police report. The vehicle he was driving had been reported stolen, police said.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
