Suffolk County’s vector control division of the Department of Public Works is planning an aerial larvicide spraying tomorrow, the county health department said in a press release this afternoon. The pesticide application is intended to control mosquito larvae.
Locations include some in the towns of Riverhead, Southold and Southampton. They were identified by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services as: Indian Island, Overlook, Crescent Duck Farm, Aquebogue Farm and Millar Farm in the Town of Riverhead; New Suffolk, Great Hog Neck, Kerwin Boulevard, Pipes Neck Creek and Pipes Cove in the Town of Southold; and, locally, Iron Point in the Town of Southampton.
Vector control will apply Vectobac 12AS (Bti), which is registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and are applied in accordance with the required state and federal permits, the county agency said in the notice.
“No precautions are recommended to prepare for this spraying, as the helicopter will be flying at a very low level over marsh areas and taking other precautions to control drift into inhabited areas,” according to the notice. “Human exposure from this operation is unlikely and the products involved have no significant human toxicity.”
The spraying will take place between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 18.
