Imagine a hundred bonfires floating along the Peconic River, accompanied by drums, dancing and thousands of people enjoying an award-winning arts and music festival in downtown Riverhead.

WaterFire, the highly successful international community arts event, has set its sights on Riverhead for its next location – and you can meet its creator this weekend at Stony Brook’s Southampton campus.

Barnaby Evans, who began the first WaterFire event in Providence, Rhode Island 20 years ago, will present his vision for a Riverhead WaterFire festival in a public outreach event Saturday.

“We encourage all members of the Riverhead and Southampton community to come out and attend this event,” said Lisa Lowenstein, liaison for philanthropy and outreach.

WaterFire brings a million people and about $115 million to the local economy in Providence, Rhode Island each year. It has since expanded to locations around the world, including Rome, Singapore and Houston.

The outreach event will take place Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Duke Chancellor’s Hall at Stony Brook University Southampton on Tuckahoe Road. The presentation itself will take place from 6 to 7 p.m., with a meet and greet to follow. Light refreshments will be available.
