Each year Riverhead Middle School students in grades six through eight enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest. The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. The theme of the essay this year was “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans’. The President of the Ladies Auxiliary of Riverhead VFW Post 7426, Dorothy Minnick, presented the certificates and checks to the middle school students.
The winners are:
First Place – Christina Yakaboski (7th grade)
Second Place – Katie Moore (7th Grade)
Third Place – Caelin Casado (8th Grade)
