Two people were seriously injured in a head-on crash on Route 25 in Calverton Tuesday evening at about 6:20 p.m.

Riverhead Police said, according to their initial investigation, a 2008 Toyota Camry, operated by Charles A. Cali, 19, of Riverhead, was eastbound on Route 25 near the entrance to Calverton National Cemetery, when it veered into the westbound lane striking a 2002 Chevy Pickup operated by Shawn K. Caffrey, 44 of Miller Place. The Camry continued eastbound in the westbound lane, colliding head-on with a 2014 Kia Optima driven by Sheryl A. Mullins, 48, of Miller Place.

Wading River Fire Department responded and extricated both Cali and Mullins from their vehicles. WRDF rescue transported Cali and Mullins to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries, police said. Both are listed in serious but stable condition, according to a police press release.

A New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit was requested and responded, according to the release. The road was closed in both directions while the investigation continued and the accident scene was cleared.

Police said there were no arrests in connection with the accident, which remains under investigation. They ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information to contact the Riverhead Police Department Detective Division at 631-727-4500.
