Tears flowed in the midst of jubilation today as principal Phil Kent and the teachers and staff at Aquebogue Elementary School gave their students a big send-off on the last day of school.
The annual “clap-off” — a tradition for about five years now — has kindergarteners through third-graders lining the hallways to clap for the 90 or so fourth-graders as they leave the K-4 elementary school for the last time.
Teachers, aides and kids alike shed tears and exchanged hugs and kisses before boarding big yellow buses to head home for the long summer break.
“It’s been a great year,” Kent told his students over the school’s PA system. “Now go home, have a great summer and keep reading and practicing your math skills!”
