A red carpet reception sent the graduating seniors off to prom in style yesterday. Photo: Katie Blasl

Students bedecked in glittering gowns and tuxedos posed for photos in the high school courtyard yesterday at a pre-prom red carpet reception.

Music, refreshments, a red carpet with a backdrop and professional photographers made the send-off extra special for Riverhead’s graduating seniors.

The reception, sponsored by Riverhead Community Awareness Program (CAP), is intended to curtail alcohol use before and during prom by giving students a safe space to take pictures and get excited for prom. This was the third year the reception was held.

A line of coach buses waited in the back of the parking lot to transport students to and from prom, which was held at Bellport Country Club this year.

Couples lined up at the red carpet, donated by the Suffolk Theater, to have their photo taken professionally in front of a Peconic Bay Medical Center backdrop and floral arrangements provided by Ivy Acres. Students and parents will be able to access the professional photos free online.
