Traffic on Mill Road in downtown Riverhead just north of Main Street is snarled due to a train stopped east of the crossing because of an intoxicated man lying near the tracks.

Riverhead Police and EMTs were initially dispatched to the scene at about 4:40 p.m. on a report of a train versus pedestrian accident, but the unidentified man was not hit by the train and did not appear to be injured, according to radio reports.

MTA police were called to the scene to investigate.

Though the LIRR train was not stopped in the crossing, the railroad crossing gates remained down. Police on scene were directing traffic around the gates to alleviate congestion.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to assist the man, who was described by police as “heavily intoxicated.” He was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center. No further information was immediately made available about his condition.

A LIRR passenger train out of NYC was scheduled to arrive in Riverhead at 4:22 p.m.

A man was struck and killed on the tracks east of Mill Road in December. Police said he was lying across the tracks at about  10:20 p.m. on Dec. 23.   The MTA did not subsequently release the identity of the victim.

An MTA spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.
