With the highly anticipated Tall Ships Festival scheduled to set sail into Greenport this week and six majestic vessels ready to tie up at the village’s historic marina, festivities are slated to begin on Friday as a sea of scheduled events unfolds.

The Greenport Tall Ships Festival will feature six ships from four different countries, with the highlight centering on the arrival of France’s L’Hermione, a recreation of a sailing vessel making a symbolic journey across the Atlantic to commemorate General LaFayette’s voyage in 1780.

The Hermione represents the strong ties between the United States and France. Joining the L’Hermione will be the Picton Castle, Sagres, Lynx, AJ Meerwald and Kalmar Nyckel.

Tickets are required for Tall Ships’ visitation and can be purchased here.  Regular priced tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for kids; family packs are available. For tickets, click here. Daily ship tour hours are from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Each ticket is good for one entire day, for the touring of all ships. Educational and sponsor exhibits will be located in Mitchell Park, and live music will be performed in two locations.

Parking will be available on village streets and at Greenport High School, located at 720 Front Street.

The Long Island Rail Road will offer expanded service on July 4 and 5 for the event.

Volunteers are needed: Volunteers will work a minimum of four hours and receive perks, including two free tickets, an event staff T-shirt, beverages, snacks, and a letter of thanks from the village. Volunteering is a great opportunity for students seeking community service opportunities, village officials said. Those wishing to volunteer should arrive at 9:45 a.m. at the Old Schoolhouse each day to offer their services.
