A two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 58 and Mill Road sent three people — one of them a small child — to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
An eastbound Chrysler minivan collied with a northbound Toyota sedan at the intersection at about 10:15 a.m.
The sedan was attempting to make a left onto Route 58, police said, when it was broadsided by the eastbound van.
Initial reports to police said there was a vehicle overturned and was on fire, but neither was accurate. Riverhead Fire Department responded to the scene.
Police shut down Route 58 in both directions while the accident scene was investigated and cleared. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported a 21-year-old male, who was a front-seat passenger in the Toyota, and a female child, who was a back-seat passenger in the Toyota, to Peconic Bay Medical Center. Police said their injuries were not serious. The driver of the minivan was also taken to PBMC with injuries police also said were not life-threatening.
Police reopened Route 58 at 10:48 a.m.
It was not immediately known if police issued any summonses to either driver.
