An 18-year-old male was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital early this morning after his vehicle hit a utility pole on Sound Avenue near Pier Avenue shortly after 5 a.m.

His injuries were not life-threatening, Riverhead police said.

Police said James Wolf, address unavailable, was eastbound on Sound Avenue when he lost control of his vehicle, which left the roadway and hit the pole, which snapped and came to a rest on top of the vehicle.  Jamesport Fire Department responded to extricate the victim from the vehicle by removing the roof of the car. Firefighters secured a landing zone for the Suffolk MedEvac helicopter at Iron Pier beach.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps treated the victim and transported him to landing zone for transfer to the helicopter.

Sound Avenue was closed for about two-and-a-half hours, while the accident scene was cleared.

PSEG is reporting 34 customers without power in the area of the crash.
