Local captains have zeroed in on striped bass this week. The highs and lows of previous weeks have disappeared this week with much more reliable bass fishing in local rips. Very encouraging reports 2015_brian_nigro_badgeare coming in from offshore as well.

The Brooklyn Girl’s Captain Ken called to tell me he has been bass fishing in the Race and Plum Gut with fish to 35 pounds on bucktails or eels. Hannah and James came out from Manhattan Tuesday for some nice action with fluke around Gardiner’s Island.

Jenglo charters checked in after a nice offshore trip. Brian Ringold, Harry Carter and Chris Logerfo went out and trolled the Butterfish hole and were rewarded with a nice bluefin tuna in the 70-pound class.

Orient Star IV was not to be outdone on the offshore scene. Captain Dan went out on a crew trip shark fishing with some local captains. They caught and realeased a bunch of blue sharks to 300 pounds. They also caught a mako of about 100 pounds that was kept for some delicious steaks. Dan set up the slick in water that was 66 degrees, Mr. Mako’s magic number. Inshore fishing is holding up very nicely, captain and crew are especially looking forward to the sea bass opener on the 15th.

Captain Rob Thompson says the blues are all over on the shallow water/back bay areas. The blues are feeding very aggressively when the dinner bell rings.

The Fishy Business boat and Captain Phil Kess have been busy buck tailin’ bass! Fish to 25 pounds out in the Race and Plum Gut. Fluke are taking spearing /belly combo baits in the Gardiner’s Island area. The Fishy Business is sailing open on Sunday July 12 for fluke. Call ahead for reservations.

Bill was very helpful over at Jamesport Bait and Tackle, with a very detailed report. Offshore of Shinnecock Inlet the bluefin bite is still on in 130 feet of water, fish are being taken on the troll. Two miles east of the dip yellowfin, bluefin and lots of mahi mahi are being taken. Back in the bay, porgies are still active around buoys 20, 22 and 30. Blues have been blitzing at the end of the flood in the area between Robin’s Island and Nassau Point. Fluke are being caught in 40-60 feet of water around Gardiner’s Island. Plum Gut is producing some very large porgies on the slack tides. Bass are hitting buck tails on the outgoing tide in the Gut as well. Finally, in the Sound fluke are hitting in areas around Roanoke Shoal and the pipeline and porgies are being caught from Mattituck Inlet all the way to Horton’s Point.
