2014 0602 helicopter spraying

Suffolk County’s vector control division of the Department of Public Works is planning an aerial larvicide spraying tomorrow, the county health department said in a press release this afternoon. The pesticide application is intended to control mosquito larvae.

Locations include some in the towns of Riverhead, Southold and Southampton. They were identified by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services as: Stokes Poges, Westhampton Dunes and Iron Point in the Town of Southampton; Overlook, Crescent Duck Farm and Millar Farm in the Town of Riverhead; New Suffolk, Great Hog Neck, Pipes Neck Creek and Pipes Cove in the Town of Southold.

The pesticide will be applied via low altitude, large dropout liquid application of Altosid Liquid concentrate (methoprene).

“No precautions are recommended to prepare for this spraying, as the helicopter will be flying at a very low level over marsh areas and taking other precautions to control drift into inhabited areas,” according to the notice. “Human exposure from this operation is unlikely and the products involved have no significant human toxicity.”

The spraying will take place between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21.
