Single travel lane closures on the Route 25 bridge over the Long Island Expressway in Riverhead are now underway around-the-clock, the state Department of Transportation announced.

A single travel lane in both directions is closed as part of the $10.2 million project to rehabilitate the bridge. A single travel lane in each direction will remain open to motorists but traffic will also be shifted to accommodate various construction tasks.

The lane closures will remain in effect until spring 2016.

Motorists are urged to use alternate routes to help avoid travel delays, the DOT said.

This bridge project is being undertaken to help ensure the longevity of this aging bridge and maintain the safety of motorists, according to a press release issued by the agency Friday. It includes replacing the bridge deck and deteriorated structural elements, drainage improvements, sidewalk and pedestrian facility enhancements, new guiderail and pavement markings.

The operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather, the DOT said. Emergency service providers and local officials have been notified of these travel lane closures.
