About 150 customers in Riverhead were among the more than 5,000 PSEG customers without power Monday evening.

Demands on the utility’s network due to yesterday’s oppressive heat led to most of the outages, according to PSEG-LI. Most of the outages were in Nassau County.

Electricity went out yesterday evening for customers in northeastern Riverhead when a transformer had to be replaced, a spokesperson for PSEG said last night. Power was restored in Riverhead by about 8:30 p.m. she said.

PSEG said it has adequate capacity to meet customer demands, but asks customers to limit the impact of hot weather and manage electric usage with conservation measures, including using timers on air conditioners, keeping them off when not at home, and setting thermostats at 78 degrees or higher.

The utility asks that customers run major appliances such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, and pool pumps in the morning or late evening to avoid peak demand hours of 2 to 8 p.m.

“PSEG Long Island has significant resources available and will address outages as quickly and safely as possible,” the company said in a press release yesterday.

Customers who experience an outage should call 1-800- 490-0075.
