(Updated July 22, 5:22 a.m.) An 83-year-old Aquebogue man and his wife were seriously injured in a head-on collision on Sound Avenue in Aquebogue Tuesday night.

Riverhead Police said Leonard Turano was driving a 2004 Toyota Matrix westbound when it entered the eastbound  lane and crashed head-on into a 2000 Nissan operated by 18-year-old Andrzej Faron of Riverhead.

Turano’s wife Marie, 75, a back-seat passenger in the Toyota, had to be extricated from the vehicle by Riverhead Fire Department. She was treated at the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and subsequently airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with with multiple fractures to her lower extremities, according to Riverhead police. Turano, who police said sustained serious injuries, was transported to Stony Brook by RVAC via ambulance. No further information on the condition of either victim was immediately available. Faron was taken by RVAC to Peconic Bay Medical Center with minor injuries, police said.

The accident occurred just east of West Lane at about 10:10 p.m., according to police.

“An investigation conducted at the scene concluded that Turano’s vehicle drifted into the eastbound lane into the path of Faron’s vehicle, causing the collision,” Riverhead police said in a press release issued early Wednesday morning.

No charges were filed against either driver, police said.

Sound Avenue was closed to traffic in both directions between West and Phillips lanes and remained closed while emergency workers cleared the scene and Riverhead Police investigated.

The crash was the second on Sound Avenue that closed the roadway Tuesday. An accident Tuesday morning east of Herricks Lane sent one woman to Stony Brook by helicopter after her eastbound minivan rear-ended another eastbound vehicle, hit a tree and overturned, according to police at the scene.   Sound Avenue was closed to traffic in both directions between Manor and Aldrich lanes following that crash at about 11:40 a.m.
