The Riverhead cheerleading program is raising money through a GoFundMe page for a variety of expenses in the coming school year, including the possibility of a trip to Florida for the national championships.

The cheerleading program has a brand new booster club this year, after the old one was disbanded when many students of parents in leadership positions graduated in June.

“We’re basically starting from scratch,” said Jennifer Confort, a parent in the new booster club.

Money raised will go to expenses like uniforms, supplies and music licenses. It will also help fund the program’s trips to a Pennsylvania cheerleading camp and to Florida for national championships in the spring, which the varsity team has attended for the past several years.

Last season, they made it to the national semi-finals for the first time in the program’s history.

“These girls are dedicated,” said Confort. “They work hard. They practice six days a week.” Her own daughter, who is going into eighth grade, is “constantly tumbling” in Confort’s backyard.

The cheerleading program, which includes the middle school, junior varsity and varsity teams, is also planning several fundraising events in the coming weeks.

“If you can even donate one dollar, please consider doing so,” she said. “Every dollar counts.”
