The first day of kindergarten can be scary – but nothing puts kids at ease like ice cream.

An ice cream social today at the library is giving rising kindergartners an opportunity to get comfortable and make friends before their first day of school next month.

“You can see the apprehension on some of the kids’ faces,” said Lenore Thomas, a district speech therapist who was serving ice cream today. “It’s a good way to acclimate them to being around the other kids. You can see they’re all getting into it.”

The first, from 11 a.m. to noon, is for Phillips and Roanoke Avenue elementary schools; the second, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., is for Riley Avenue; and the third, from 2 to 3 p.m., is for Aquebogue.

Parents can get answers to any questions about the upcoming school year from teachers and faculty in the library’s stage room next-door.
