The dog days of August have arrived. How will you beat the heat and humidity? Hitting the beach or staying indoors with air-conditioning? If you’re looking to venture outdoors, here’s a rundown of the highlights of events and happenings this week in Riverhead. For the full selection, visit the RiverheadLOCAL events calendar.

The Edgar Allan Poe Festival will hold auditions for actors, dancers and performers on Tuesday, 4-8 p.m. at Riverhead Free Library. More information.

If you live in Riverside or Flanders, you’ll want to attent the “Wildfire Mitigation Forum” hosted by the state pine barrens commission at the Crohan Community Center Tuesday at 7 p.m. Representatives will discuss plans for the prevention and spread of wildfires in the local pine barrens.

Come join a drum circle at East End Arts Wednesday, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. All are welcome to this free activity.

Art takes hold on the Peconic River in the latter part of the week, with the East End Arts artist in residence Chris Dyer, a Peruvian-Canadian artist, setting up shop to paint boats, conduct workshops and give a film screening and lecture in the days leading up to the cardboard boat races on Sunday. Dyer hosts a film screening & lecture: “Positive Creations” at the East End Arts Carriage House Friday at 6 p.m. He will also host “Express Yourself Art Workshop & Creativity Jam” on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. More information.

Thursdays bring classic cars to the Peconic Riverfront each week for the BID’s “Classic Car Cruise Night.” Take a stroll down memory lane with a DJ spinning golden oldies in the gazebo. Free admission.

Thursday is movie night at the Crohan Community Center, where the Flanders-Northampton Community Association is hosting a showing of “Despicable Me 2.” Details.

Saturday brings the annual Antique Fair at Old Steeple Church, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Riverhead Recreation Department will show a free movie on the Wading River town beach Saturday at 8 p.m. Bring a chair or blanket and the whole family to enjoy “Surf’s Up.”

Sunday is the day for two big events in town: The Jamesport Fire Department’s annual “Sound to Bay” 5K/10K race steps off at 9 a.m. sharp. More information.

The Great Cardboard Boat Races will take place Sunday beginning at 12 noon. The popular annual event on the Peconic River was postponed from its usual date on the last Sunday in June due to the massive fish kill in the river this year. Boats must be constructed of cardboard and duct tape only. Details.
