John Niecko of Riverhead died on August 19. He was 77 years old.

Born on August 30, 1937 in Nalyboki, Poland, he was the son of Edward Niecko and Mary Stasieukiewicz. After attending Riverhead High School, he served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958.

One year after returning home, he married his wife, Helen, in 1959. Their marriage lasted 43 years before she passed away in 2002.

For 36 years, Niecko was the Sunday morning radio host for WRIV’s “Polka Time.” He was also member of the Polish Town Civic Association.

He was predeceased by his wife and his brother, Anthony, in 2003. He is survived by his daughters, Patricia Raynor of Riverhead and Annette Madzellan of Tuscon, Arizona; his brother, Bernard of Laurel; as well as Stacia Grabowski of Riverhead and Ann Howell of Florida. He is also survived by four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors on Thursday, August 20 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home. A service will be held on Friday, August 21 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Isidore Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the St. Isidore Cemetery.
