Riverhead Police report the arrest last night of a Riverhead man in the theft of a vehicle from the parking lot of a Mastic Beach convenience store earlier in the day.

Police were called to the 7-Eleven at 1733 Old Country Road in Riverhead at 10:47 p.m. Saturday in response to a report of a stolen vehicle that was located by its owner, police said in a press release issued this morning.

A woman whose 2001 Chevrolet Silverado was stolen from Handy Pantry in Mastic Beach earlier in the day yesterday came to Riverhead after being advised by her bank that credit cars left inside the vehicle were being used in the Riverhead area.

She located her truck last night, parked at the 7-Eleven on Route 58 across from the Costco shopping center, according to police. She observed a man exit the store and attempt to enter the stolen truck. Her son and a bystander detained the man until police arrived, according to the report.

The Riverhead Police detective division was notified and responded. The investigation led to the arrest of Andrew A. Berezny, of Riverhead, on two counts of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property (fourth and fifth degree), police said.

Suffolk County Police were notified the vehicle was located.

The investigation is ongoing for possible additional charges. Berezny was processed and held for arraignment, police said.
