A Dumpster caught fire on Roanoke Avenue this afternoon, apparently the result of an emptied ashtray.

Riverhead firefighters extinguished a blazing Dumpster fire Thursday afternoon on Roanoke Avenue.

The trash bin, located to the rear of the dwelling on Roanoke, north of Middle, was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on scene in response to the 4:24 p.m. alarm.

Someone had just emptied an ash tray into the Dumpster, according to Riverhead Fire Department First Assistant Chief Kevin Brooks.

Firefighters quickly put out the blaze.

The fire department responded to two more calls — both gas leaks — after the Dumpster fire today, bringing the day’s total number of alarms to 10 as of 7 p.m., not including numerous automatic fire alarm calls to which the chiefs responded.  The day started with a call for an open burn shortly after midnight, followed by a house fire in Calverton at about 3 a.m. and a gas leak in Riverside at about 6 a.m.
