Overnight lane closures on Flanders Road will begin this Sunday over the next two weeks to complete the New York State Department of Transportation’s ongoing repaving project.

A single travel lane will be closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. every night over the next two weeks except for Fridays and Saturdays.

Lanes will be closed between Oak Avenue and the traffic circle on Flanders Road, but lanes will be shifted to allow a single northbound and southbound travel lane to remain open during the nighttime construction, according to a Department of Transportation press release.

The lane closures will be in effect for the two weeks of construction, weather permitting. The project may be canceled, postponed or prolonged due to inclement weather, the DOT said.

The construction is part of a $5.2 million state project to repave seven miles of Flanders Road between Lake Avenue and Old Riverhead Road. The final 1.6 miles of repaving will be performed during the nighttime hours to minimize the impact on residents, businesses and motorists, the DOT said.

The top layer of the worn, distressed pavement is being removed then replaced with new asphalt and fresh pavement markings including bike lane striping and more visible pedestrian crosswalks.
