A score doesn’t always tell the story of a game. And it certainly doesn’t always reflect how well you play.

McGann-Mercy football coach Jeff Doroski knows that all too well. The Monarchs’ first two outings of the season ended in lopsided losses. But they played the top seeded Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats last week — a team that went undefeated and took home the L.I. championship in 2014 — and number two John Glenn this week.

“You go toe-to-toe with those two teams the first two weeks and you get an idea where you need to be to compete at that level,” Doroski said.

“Our guys will come out and compete with anybody and they did that. They earned respect from the top two teams,” Doroski said. “They come out to play and they play hard and don’t give up.”

Last night against Glenn, the Monarchs had “a nice day offensively” even though it’s not reflected in the final score, Doroski said. They lost to the Knights, 49-12.

Quarterback Kevin Santacroce went 15 for 30, passing for 220 yards. Running back Sammy Schrage had six catches out of the backfield for 98 yards and 13 carries for 101 yards.

Jack Pavelchak also had a big day. The linebacker picked off a pass and ran it in for a touchdown. He also had six tackles and two sacks. While playing offense — he’s also an offensive receiver — he had four catches for 68 yards.

The Monarchs (0-2) are off next week and then hit the road for two games. They return home for Homecoming Day on Oct. 10.
