A Riverhead man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after he overturned his vehicle on Sound Avenue in Riverhead Sunday night, injuring himself and a passenger, according to Riverhead Town Police.

Police said they were called to the area of Sound Avenue west of County Road 105 at 11:07 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20 on a report of an overturned vehicle. Responding officers found an eastbound 1998 Isuzu SUV “had overturned numerous times,” hitting several trees on the north side of the road before coming to a rest on the driver’s side.

Officers found Jesus Bonilla, 40, a passenger in the vehicle, conscious and lying on the ground, having been ejected from the vehicle, according to a police press release issued Monday night.

The driver of the vehicle had fled the scene, police said. With the assistance of the Riverhead K9 unit, police located the driver hiding in a wooded area on the north side of the road, according to the report.

Sebastian Membreno, 22, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

Membreno had sustained a severe laceration to his right arm requiring stitches, according to police, while Bonilla had sustained lacerations to his back.

Both men were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
