Two men were arrested on robbery charges after forcibly removing a man’s cellphone after an altercation on Railroad Avenue at about 2 a.m. this morning, according to Riverhead Town Police.
Police said Nicholas Conforti, 24, of Flanders and John Orlando, 26, of Manorville, were among “several subjects” who confronted a taxi driver in front of a Railroad Avenue storefront, according to a report made to police. The suspects fled the area in a vehicle, police said.
Responding patrol units located the vehicle on Raynor Avenue near Pulaski Street, according to police.
Conforti and Orlando were taken into custody without incident, police said. They were both charged with robbery in the second degree. Conforti was additionally charged with second-degree harassment and fourth-degree criminal mischief. Orlando was additionally charged with driving while intoxicated, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh and unlawful possession of marijuana, according to police. Both were processed on their respective charges and held for arraignment.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
