When it rains, it pours — especially when the Blue Waves are in town.

The last time Riverhead traveled to face an undefeated Smithtown West Bulls team, they came home with the win. It was no different Friday night when the Blue Waves came in as underdogs sporting a 1-2 record. But the Bulls, (3-0) could not move the ball in the unrelenting downpour and committed four turnovers, leading to a 16-6 beatdown by the Blue Waves.

Riverhead (2-2 Division II) got on the board first with a 27-yard field goal by Nico Bossey and went into halftime leading, 3-0. The Blue Waves would strike first in the second half as Tristan Falisi connected with Tyrese Kerr on a 41-yard pass with 1:39 left in the third. And then Kerr put the game away himself with a 40-yard run in the fourth quarter with minutes to spare to sink Smithtown West (3-1 Division II).

The Bulls didn’t go away though, two Riverhead fumbles set up scoring chances and they capitalized on one to make it 16-6, which is where the game would end.

Curtis Flippen recorded two interceptions in the victory. Sharron Trent also brought an interception down for the Blue Waves.

The win puts the Blue Waves back in the playoff race after starting the season with two losses. They’re back home next Saturday for Senior Day, when they’ll face Newfield, also undefeated (3-0) going into today’s game against Bellport.
