Evelyn Greene King of Riverhead died peacefully at Peconic Bay Skilled Nursing Facility on Wednesday, September 30. She was 78 years old.

Born on May 14, 1937 to Myron and Evelyn Bennett of Southampton, Evelyn was one of 10 children. Many of the locals knew her from The Buttery in Southampton (formerly Margaret’s Rendezvous) where she worked as a waitress for many years.

Known for her quick wit, pleasant smile and zest for life, Evelyn could also be very candid. She was often heard saying, “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!” to those who were rude.

Evelyn loved her family and has a special place in her heart for all her grandchildren. Some of her favorite pastimes included bingo, gardening, crocheting, the beach, soft shell crabs, flip flops, frogs in any way, shape or form, a good cup of coffee and a definite appreciation for a good meal.

She loved spending time with friends and family, was a very generous person and enjoyed a good time.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Robert and Harold Bennett and her sisters, Dorothy Painter and Beverly McKavish.

She is survived by her sisters, Joan Kelly of Florida, Barbara Kincaid of Las Vegas and Mary Ellen Renkens of Hampton Bays; her brothers, Eugene Bennett of Riverhead and John Bennett of Southampton; and her four children: David Greene and his wife, Debbie; Kevin Greene and his wife, Pam; Debbie Harrington; and Myron Greene. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A service was held at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead on Monday, October 5 and there will be a Celebration of Evelyn’s Life in the near future.

Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice Inc., P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978.
