A 37-year-old man with a history of larceny convictions was arrested and charged with attempted criminal trespass of a Route 58 medical office after a search by Riverhead Police last night.

Police officers responded to East End Allergy 1149 Old Country Road on a report of a power outage. Officers determined that the power to the building had been manually shut off and the window screens on the rear of the building had been removed, according to a police press release issued early this morning.

Riverhead K9-2 responded to the scene to assist and located Joseph Reiter, of Riverhead, attempting to leave the area, according to the report.

The K9 unit conducted a search of the area, placing Reiter at the rear of the building as well as the electrical panel to the building, police said.

Reiter an active parole warrant for his arrest, police said. He had been released on parole from an upstate prison in July after serving four months on a third-degree burglary conviction stemming from his January arrest by Riverhead Police for burglarizing a Route 58 optometry office on Dec. 18 and Jan. 1. Reiter had previously been paroled in October 2014 after serving a prior four-month sentence on his conviction of two fourth-degree grand larceny charges, one of which was an auto theft charge, according to state corrections department records. He had been charged by Riverhead Police in that case on Oct. 1, 2013.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
