Update (9:12 p.m.) Riverhead Police have charged a 59-year-old Riverhead woman with criminal possession of stolen property in connection with the theft of a dog from a Riverhead apartment.

Police charged Erin Kutur with criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree. She was released on an appearance ticket for a future court date, police said.

“The dog was located in good health,” Riverhead Police said in a press release issued at 9:01  p.m.

The investigation is ongoing, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call the detective division at 631-727-4500, ext. 332.

Prior story:
After someone broke into a Riverhead woman’s apartment yesterday and stole her Yorkshire Terrier, the dog mysteriously turned up in the apartment complex’s parking lot this afternoon, according to Bill Oberhausen, superintendent of the Fairfield Pines apartment complex.

Police were searching the complex throughout the day, Oberhausen said, when someone suddenly found Bella in the complex’s parking lot.

“All of a sudden Bella just appeared,” Oberhausen said. “The police were there most of the day.

“We believe it was a tenant here,” he added. “We’re all pretty sure who did it.”

A Riverhead detective called Kelly Turbush, the dog’s owner, to share the news as she was finishing work today.

“I’m so relieved,” Turbush said. “I’m so happy she’s safe.”

She echoed Oberhausen’s suspicion that the burglar was another tenant at the complex. “I just want to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Turbush said. “What’s to stop them from breaking in while I’m at work tomorrow, or the next day?”
