It was a senior day to forget. Anything that could have went wrong, went wrong on Saturday afternoon for the Blue Waves at Coach Mike McKillop Memorial Field.
A two-win resurgence brought Riverhead’s record to 2-2 after starting the season 0-2. Things were looking up. That was until Newfield (5-0 Division II) came to town.
The Wolverines did what they pleased, scoring touchdowns on their first five possessions en route to a 45-7 blowout victory.
Riverhead (2-3 Division II) had one lone bright spot when Ryun Moore broke a long end-to-end kickoff return back for a touchdown. Other than that, it was simply a game to forget.
“It was definitely a beat-down,” head coach Leif Shay said. “All the things we thought we could do we just weren’t able to do. They’re a really good football team. They’re undefeated for a reason.”
Even with a 2-3 record though, Riverhead’s playoff chances aren’t yet squandered. There’s still games to be played and with the power rankings system, you never know what the computers will spit out.
“We’re not quitters,” Shay said. “We don’t raise quitters in Riverhead. We’re going to regroup and we’re going after Hills West next week.”
The Blue Waves travel to Half Hollow Hills West next Saturday for a 1:30 p.m start.
