All government offices are closed today.

Schools are closed.

The post office is closed. There is no mail delivery, except Express Mail.

Municipal trash collection in Riverhead follows a regular schedule.

The Riverhead Free Library is open. (Regular hours: 9 a.m.-9 p.m.)

LIRR and Suffolk County buses follow a regular weekday schedule.

The New York Stock Exchange is open. Most banks are closed.

Columbus Day, Oct. 12, was made a federal holiday by an act of Congress in 1934. In 1971, with the federal Monday Holiday Act, the observance of the holiday was changed to the second Monday in October.
